WEST 4130: Fog of War

Adapted from a previous course, Fog of War is designed to introduce students to a range of scholars, artists and filmmakers from various ethnic backgrounds. As such, the content features those thinkers who explore the topic of war, and have used their writing and art to position themselves as subjects within, and engage in a dialogue with, both their own communities and within dominant society. Focusing on the post-WWII era, we will consider how the Vietnam War and the "War on Terror" transformed media literacy and collective memory, with special attention to the ways in which social-cultural categories such as race, class, gender, class, religion, nationhood, sexuality, and ability intersect.

Patching the Pipeline

My first co-authorship, I worked alongside an amazing group of scholars at the UCLA School of Education. We analyzed data and interviewed members of an undergraduate research program focused on serving Black students while fostering mentorship across graduate levels.

WEST 3100: Women, Image & Voice: Afrofuturism

This course examines how the intersections of race, ethnicity, and gender are constructed both within and against traditional American feminism and gender critiques. Addresses areas of divergence from mainstream feminism, as well as the construction of alternative representations in media by women of color, particularly Black women. Among the sub-themes and issues that will be considered are Black feminism, liberation, space exploration, time travel, memory, media representation, technology, science and speculative fiction, art, the African diaspora and the relationship between migration and the creative imagination.

Benchmarks

One of my many passion projects, I have been writing a screenplay based on professionals of color. A blend of humor and drama, the series offers a nuanced portrayal of academic and social challenges faced by marginalized communities, with a sharp, sophisticated edge. The irony of using a stock image from a search "college" is that they automatically have a super diverse group on hand, how neat is that?
